Amaryllis Partnership Assignment
Cinnamon BunAmaryllis Partnership Assignment is the Exploration Guild decision that makes Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis Albatross expedition partners. What begins as an administrative pairing is immediately strained by Amaryllis’s contempt for Broccoli’s apparent inexperience, yet the assignment gives Broccoli the companionship she has been seeking and places both characters inside the same chain of danger, rescue, institutional conflict, and eventual trust.
Assignment and Expedition Context
The partnership is arranged at the Exploration Guild after Broccoli has already accumulated practical experience outside formal adventuring structures. The nearly empty lobby contains Mister Rainnewt, the secretary, and an unfamiliar Grenoil Pathfinder of the Midnight Marshes. Rainnewt identifies Broccoli Bunch to the newcomer and states that she will be Amaryllis’s partner for the expedition, while also instructing the Pathfinder to take care of her because she possesses experience of her own. The assignment therefore treats Broccoli as inexperienced but not helpless: she is being placed under expedition supervision, not simply dismissed as a novice.
The introduction occurs alongside the assembling expedition party. Two Grenoil siblings, France and Florence, arrive equipped with robes, armor, swords, staffs, backpacks, and sleeping gear, while Gabriel is presented as the senior guild member who will lead the expedition. Amaryllis enters last, and Broccoli recognizes her as the harpy who had insulted her clothing during their earlier encounter. This prior friction gives the formal pairing an immediate personal history: the guild’s chosen partnership joins someone eager for friendship to someone who has already judged her unfavorably.
The Initial Mismatch
Rainnewt designates Broccoli as Amaryllis’s partner, and Broccoli responds with open enthusiasm, introducing herself and expressing the hope that they will become the best of friends. Amaryllis instead questions whether Broccoli represents the best the Exploration Guild can provide. When Broccoli insists that she can handle herself, Gabriel cuts through the argument by telling Amaryllis to join Broccoli or remain behind. Amaryllis crosses her arms, huffs, and accepts the assignment, allowing the expedition to leave for the docks.
Their unequal self-presentations make the contrast especially clear. Amaryllis identifies herself as the third daughter of the Albatross family and a Thunder Mage whose specialty is mid-range area-of-effect magic. Broccoli describes herself as the only daughter of the Bunch family on Earth, a Cinnamon Bun whose class is oriented toward support, with few useful skills and poor combat ability but considerable confidence in conversation. She also introduces Orange Bunch as her spirit kitten companion, emphasizing comfort and companionship as much as combat utility. Amaryllis’s reaction suggests that Broccoli’s priorities and self-assessment are difficult for her to understand.
The pairing nevertheless requires immediate practical intimacy. Gabriel observes that people who share a tent should be on good terms, since the alternatives can be unpleasant. The expedition thus converts social compatibility into a survival concern. Broccoli wants favorite colors, foods, and books to be part of the introduction, while Amaryllis offers lineage, class, and combat specialization. Their first exchange establishes the central tension of the relationship: Broccoli seeks a person, whereas Amaryllis initially presents a professional capability and expects to be evaluated by it.
Partnership Through Danger
The assignment’s significance expands when Amaryllis becomes endangered and Broccoli refuses to treat the partnership as a temporary guild arrangement. After Amaryllis is taken by the Cervid mercenaries, Broccoli insists that she must be rescued because Amaryllis is her friend. Gunther initially questions why Broccoli believes she can succeed after already losing against the kidnappers, but he eventually agrees to assist. His help is conditional and carries a debt, with Throat Ripper designated as the one who will provide the actual assistance, yet the decision gives Broccoli the means to continue pursuing Amaryllis.
Broccoli’s response to Gunther reveals how the partnership has altered her priorities. She does not merely request institutional aid or calculate whether the rescue is strategically sensible; she frames the rescue as an obligation to a friend. Her gratitude is physical and immediate, as she embraces Gunther after he agrees to help, while Gunther responds awkwardly and reminds her that the assistance will not be free. The episode places emotional loyalty, negotiated obligation, and expeditionary danger in the same structure.
When Broccoli and Amaryllis survive their ordeal, Broccoli’s understanding of the relationship reaches an emotional climax. She realizes that she is grinning more brightly than usual because she has made a friend. Amaryllis challenges the conclusion, asking whether surviving harrowing experiences and being saved automatically make them nest buddies. Broccoli’s tears show that the word carries real importance for her, while Amaryllis’s resistance preserves the guardedness established at their first meeting. The partnership is therefore not completed by the guild’s appointment; it must be argued for and emotionally recognized after shared danger.
Guild Crisis and Continuation
The partnership is tested again by the Exploration Guild’s internal crisis. Rainnewt disappears after accepting Broccoli into the guild without following proper channels and arranging the missions. Mathide considers Broccoli’s membership subject to expulsion, while Amaryllis condemns the proposed response because Broccoli has done more to correct the guild’s mistakes than the officials responsible for them. Amaryllis also believes Rainnewt attempted to have her kidnapped, so the administrative dispute is inseparable from the danger surrounding the expedition.
Abraham Bristlecone offers a compromise rather than allowing the partnership to dissolve. He proposes taking the two girls west to Greenshade and leaving them at the Exploration Guild branch there, far from Trenten and its immediate institutional conflict. Mathide agrees to let Amaryllis bring her human friend if Amaryllis trusts her, and Amaryllis answers that she does. This is the partnership’s clearest public confirmation: Amaryllis no longer describes Broccoli as an unsuitable novice but claims trust in her before guild authorities.
The transfer also shows how an assignment can outlast the institution that created it. The original pairing is made by Rainnewt under questionable procedures, but the relationship survives his disappearance and the guild’s attempt to expel Broccoli. It is preserved through Amaryllis’s advocacy and Abraham’s proposed relocation, becoming a chosen alliance rather than merely an unauthorized administrative decision.
Lasting Significance
The assignment gives Broccoli a concrete answer to her recurring desire for friendship. Earlier encounters with Donat, Emeric, Arianne, and the Grenoil expedition widen her social world, and the repeated act of making connections eventually unlocks the general skill Friendmaking. The Amaryllis pairing is the most consequential instance of that pattern because it begins with rejection, requires persistence, and culminates in rescue, trust, and continued cooperation rather than effortless affection.
For Amaryllis, the partnership creates a counterweight to rank, family identity, and magical specialization. She enters as a Thunder Mage from the Albatross family, confident enough to question the guild’s judgment and dismiss Broccoli’s usefulness. By the guild crisis, however, she openly defends Broccoli and accepts relocation only on the condition that her human companion may accompany her. The relationship does not erase their differences: Broccoli remains a support-oriented Cinnamon Bun and Amaryllis remains the stronger combat specialist. Instead, the assignment proves that expeditionary partnership can become meaningful precisely because distinct abilities and temperaments are made interdependent.
The event’s decisive effect is therefore relational rather than bureaucratic. A guild supervisor’s pairing places two incompatible-seeming figures side by side; shared danger turns proximity into reliance; Broccoli’s insistence on naming that reliance friendship meets Amaryllis’s initial resistance; and the later guild crisis reveals that Amaryllis has chosen to stand with her. The assignment becomes the beginning of a partnership that is repeatedly tested, publicly defended, and carried forward beyond the authority that first created it.
